zaturnnah.. ze musical

Wednesday, February 1, 2006

after a friend let me borrow his copy of carlo vergara's ZsaZsa Zaturnnah, i said to myself, i have got to get a copy (and i did!). and if you've already read it, you would definitely agree that it's nothing like your typical filipino comic.

first of all, the heroine is gay (so.. is it hero or heroine?!). his name is ada and he's a (do i dare say) "barrio lass" who owns a local parlor. the story starts with a huge (and i mean.. HUGE) rock with mystical powers falling from the sky. and after ada swallows (yes.. SWALLOWS) the rock, he turns into this super heroine named zsazsa zaturnnah and the rest is history.

the story's really, really funny (and witty at the same time) that you just have to share it with friends. i even brought to work last year and people were waiting in line just to get their hands on it. everyone was talking about it for over a week and my friends and i even discussed at one point that it would be really great if they turned it into a movie. we even had a cast prepared as to who should play who. and now, believe it or not, the Tanghalang Pilipino is actually turning it into a musical. Here's an article about it that i got from fabuloush.com.

EULA VALDEZ IS ZSAZSA ZATURNNAH!!

There are plenty of hard things we’d love to put in our mouths. But quite frankly, a stone fallen from the heavens isn’t one of them. Not in Ada’s case. After swallowing a stone nearly the size of his fist, he shouts “Zaturnnah!” and his already upside-down world takes another twist. Follow the adventures of gender-bent Ada as ZsaZsa Zaturnnah as he defends her town from a giant frog, zombies, and intergalactic invader women all while he faces the truth about himself, friendship, and love. From the critically acclaimed graphic novel by Carlo Vergara comes a musical of zuper proportions.

The Tanghalang Pilipino proudly presents their 19th season finale, ZsaZsa Zaturnnah (Ze Muzical). Directed by renowned playwright and director, Chris Millado, ZsaZsa Zaturnnah is given breath and grace by Eula Valdez while the world conquering plot of the villain Queen Femina Suarestellar Baroux is executed by Agot Isidro. The musical also features the talents of Tuxqs Rutaquio as Ada, a humble beauty parlor turned superheroine; Ricci Chan as the energetic Didi, Ada’s best friend and sidekick and assistant. Also with the cast are Lauren Novero as Dodong, Ada’s love interest, Wilma Doesnt, Deeda Barretto, Tess jamias, mayen Extañero as the four Amazonistas; Mia Bolaños as Aling Britney, Bong Cabrera as Ada’s zombie father, and Carl Virtudazo as Father Bernie. The musical is adapted by Chris Martinez with songs written and composed by Vincent A. De Jesus.

Eula Valdez was part of 80’s Bagets fame. She later became the come back queen of early 2000 through the character of Amor Powers from the hit ABS-CBN soap opera, Pangako Sa ‘Yo. Agot Isidro was early 90’s television sweetheart, scoring hit ballads and hosting noontime shows. Chris Millado found recognition in the 80’s as a protest playwright with plays like Panata Sa Kalayaan/Oath to Freedom which toured Europe and the US. He currently works in both US and Philippine Theater. Ang Kagila-gilalas Na Pakikipagsapalaran Ni Zsazsa Zaturnnah won Carlo Vergara the Manila Critics Circle National Book Award for Best Comic Book of 2002. His first solo work, One Night In Purgatory, was cited by the Sanghaya Yearbook of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts as the "Best Comic Book" of 2001.

ZsaZsa Zaturnnah (Ze Muzical) will take stage at the Tanghalang Huseng Batute CCP Ctudio Theater from February 10 to March 5, 2006 ——————————————————————
